How to Provide Extra Life to Flower Arrangements

A little extra attention to any fresh floral arrangement or bouquet can provide much longer life. Depending on the kind of flowers and the care dispensed, at minimum of 5 – 7 days more of freshness can be added to flowers.

What is the best way to care for flower arrangements?

Much depends on the way they are packaged

  • Flowers that come in containers have floral foam. It must be ensured that the containers have water to the maximum capacity. Probe the container with a finger to find a place to pour water, or if not gently add water to the center of the arrangement while simultaneously checking to make sure that water does not exceed spill level.
  • When flowers come in a box or tissue, all of the foliage that falls below the water level must be removed. Next the stems must be cut with a sharp knife while being immersed in a tub full of lukewarm water. Care must be taken ensure that all stem are cut while they are beneath water level and immediately transferred with minimum exposure to the outside into a vase of warm water to which floral food has been added.
  • Care must be taken to make certain that the water is always clear if flowers are received in a vase. If the water turns cloudy, it should be emptied and fresh water mixed with the floral food added. If possible, re-cut the stems with a sharp knife before placing them in fresh water.

Flower arrangements in the vase will last much longer the simple guidelines provided below are followed.

It is important to never to keep floral arrangement atop televisions, home appliances and heating/cooling units. They should also be kept away from hot/ cold drafts and direct sunlight.

What is wrong with the water in a vase that turns yellow and cloudy?

This signals that bacteria are growing in the water. Bacteria can clog stems and shorten the vase life of flowers. Thus, water must be kept clear at all times to ensure the longevity of blooms. If your water begins to turn cloudy, the vase must be emptied immediately and fresh water, preferably mixed with the floral food added. The stems should be re-cut with a sharp knife under warm water before being placed in the vase of fresh water.

Should I keep my arrangement in the sun as flowers like sunshine?

No. Growing flowers require sunshine for maturation, but cut flowers will fade much faster if exposed to heat and direct sunlight. Place flowers in a location away from sun and drafts to keep fresh longer.

Is it possible to revive a wilted rose?

Resuscitation is sometimes possible. If a rose wilts prematurely, it should be removed from the arrangement. Next, fill a sink with warm water and keep the rose horizontally in the water tub and cut the stem (about 1") with a sharp knife under the warm water. Leave the rose in the bath for about two hours and allow the water cool. This process can have miraculous results if the rose hasn’t exceeded its vase span.

What you should consider when you purchase loose flowers for arrangements?

Look for flowers with upright, firm petals and buds that are beginning to open when selecting flowers. Yellow, spotted or drooping leaves are signs of age.
