A Muslim wedding is a relatively lengthy process. Depending on the region and the prosperity of the people, there will be various stages comprising the proposal, engagement, manyum, mehndi, barat, nikah, rukhsati, saij, walima and chauthi.

Nikah is the registration of the wedding and is usually conducted at the bride's house. Both bride and groom will wear shra (garlands of flowers), which cover their faces completely until the nikah ceremony is completed. Muslim weddings are conducted by the Maulvi (priest) in the presence of family members of the couple. The fathers of the both bride and bridegroom play an important role in the ceremony.
